Great Winter Boot

Ok, I live in Minnesota where it has been -10 for about the last 3 weeks. I spend lots of time out on the ice, ice fishing and these have kept my feet nice and toasty warm. They are a bit on the heavier side, but it's nothing I can't deal with. They stick to the ice great, like I'm walking on cement, and they are the warmest boot I have ever worn. Can't wait to use these for some hunting next fall! Would definitely buy again and I highly recommend them.

Altama Desert/ Jungle/ Leather Combat (Mil Spec)

First, this review is for 3 Altama boots- The Desert 9" Mil Spec (Panama Sole), The Black Jungle 9" Mil Spec (Panama Sole) and the All Leather Combat 10" (Lug Sole)I'm new to Altama and after the first pair (3 months ago) I now own 3.Sizing: According to Altama's web site and my own experience you should order down 1/2 size. I wear an 11 in Nike (Shox for running) and in most dress shoes and take a 10.5 in these. I have an extremely narrow foot and the regular size does just fine for me. I originally ordered the non-mil spec and the insole was just a flat piece of polyurethane or something like that. NOW... with the Mil Spec you get an actual insole, like in a running shoe. I have actually run in these on concrete and did not have any blisters or hot spots. In the snow the leather's lug sole did great and the deserts actually kept my feet dry in the rain. We have crazy weather in the mountains of WV. The Jungle boots drainage holes are a god send for wet weather and they dry pretty quickly, I was surprised how well they did dry. The All Leather Combat boots handle snow like a champ and keep your feet warm and dry. We had some good snow falls this winter and these boots stood up to the elements. The Desert boot is made for...well, hot weather. Now, I have worn them in 30F temps and my feet were not cold. I've worn them with jeans in 60F weather and they weren't too hot. I love the color, but do recommend you use some Kiwi water proofing. The spray will darken them, but the color will lighten back up overnight. I would recommend these to anyone looking for a good boot and have done so (now some co-workers have purchased the same thing and have worn them daily in bad weather)The all leather combat boot can be shined and worn to work and nobody is any the wiser that you're wearing combat boots with a nice pair of dockers. They also look great with Jeans and I've received many compliments on them.To summarize... this is for the 3 basic style Mil Spec Altama boots. I wouldn't get something cheaper to save money. Spend the money, live in comfort and watch how these stand up. If they were any less they wouldn't be military approved by the DOD.Order 1/2 size down from your size in running shoes and you're welcome (in advance) for the advice.Enjoy.

Just what you'd expect

They are really stiff at first and require breaking-in, but Altama makes good long-lasting boots. I used to wear these and the would typically last a couple of years, but then switched to the bargain shoes I'd buy at Target or some other big box stores. That was a mistake. I destroy everything. These are a good choice, but you might want to soak them in water (warm maybe) and wear them dry if you want them to perform immediately. I just break mine in normally because I'm afraid the water would damage them.

Great pair of all leather boots with speed lacing; been wearing them steadily since I got them and excellent fit, wear, soles are good on all terrain esp. in mud and snow. Not the greatest shine but use a lighter to burn on the polish and is GTG ooorah!

Rocky 16 inch Mudsox with 800g Thinsulate -- stinky but comfortable!

After trying on dozens of different styles/brands of hunting boots at many different local stores I finally found boots that are very comfortable, well made, and not too heavy to walk in. I compared Rocky Mudsox with similar styles by Muck Co, Cabelas brand, and several others.I was looking for boots that were warm enough to hunt in Central Wisconsin tree stands through November, yet light enough to splash through April puddles. I wanted a boot that would not leave human or leather scents behind. I wanted a comfortable walking boot with good arch support for the 1 mile hike in/out from my tree stand. Rocky Mudsox was the best combination of comfort and construction quality I could find in 2011.Ordinarily I wear 10.5 size shoes; I went with the size 12 Mudsox. They're a bit floppy when I only have a single pair of socks on, but I wanted extra room for two pair of heavy winter stockings plus toe warmers, or one pair thick wool ski socks plus hunting socks. (My feet get super cold sitting motionless in tree stands at 4:30 AM & 10 degrees F.) 800 Grams of Thinsulate is less than the minimum insulation needed for November Wisconsin hunting. I solved this insulation issue with a pair of Arctic Shield boot insulators applied on over my Mudsox for added in-stand warmth; Icebreaker Overboots were another option I considered. The total $100 sale price of my Mudsox + Arctic Shield overboots was about the same as other name-brand hunting boots without the Archtic Shields.Rocky Mudsox came with a thick coating of silicon over the rubber part of the boot. While this silicon probably contributes to the advertised self-cleaning tread, I didn't like how slippery the boots were. I rubbed off the silicon with paper towels.The boots were terribly stinky when I first got them, like a set of new car tires kept indoors. Removing the silicon allowed boot's adhesives to gas off. I put them in front of my wood stove for several days, rotating the boots frequently to avoid burning them and to accelerate off-gassing. Now they're much less stinky. I'll let them sit nine more months before 2012 hunting season. Most of the remaining odor should be gone by then. I may reapply a thin layer of boot silicon for protection.While more comfortable than all-rubber boots, mixed rubber & Neoprene boots appear vulnerable to shredding by black locust thorns or raspberry thistles. I plan on wearing my thick fleece hunting pants outside my Mudsox to protect the Neoprene.In summary, these boots require some effort to make them less stinky. I don't know how my odor reduction efforts will pay off in future hunting success. I figure if I can smell the boots at 10 yards the deer can probably smell them miles away. I have no way to evaluate the effectiveness of ScentIQ human scent control aid. It's certainly debatable what a deer's interpretation of chemical smells is. On the plus side, they're the most comfortable hunting boot I've ever worn, like a favorite pair of slippers. Nothing ruins a hunting day faster than cold, uncomfortable feet! I hope never to have another one of those days.(Disclosure: I bought this item at a local sporting retailer, not from Amazon. I remain a satisfied Amazon customer.)

Rocky Mudsox with 800g thinsulate, not as described.

I purchased these boots to be used in Alaska summertime fishing boats, surf fishing. Summers can get to 70 degrees here were I live. These boots were listed as 5ml thick, that's a very minimal amount of insulation. Upon arrival the boots were the beefed up version, which is fine for freezing days and hunts in the fall where body activity is considerably less. But I needed the thinner version, less bulky. Although I debated whether to keep them. They fit nice. They are very well made boots. Yet I already had a warmer version of Cabela's for hunting a 1200 g version and these are bulky big...good for sitting. So I returned them. My discussion with the Representative was not positive as she said the listing says it has insulation sir and argued with me about the web site properly listing the product information. The person listing these boots did not tell us they have 800g of thinsulate insulation. These boots by Rocky are an older version. Although the newer ones of the same type are much more expensive. These boots are a great deal! I paid $92.88. Note: The trend in these type of rubber boots is to put neoprene uppers around your calf area. I've seen many people wearing these types here in AK. Over time the neoprene loses its stiffness and starts to look less than desirable (saggy) and they get dirty and retain the dirty look. I ordered the rubber boots with a an adjustable top to keep water and snow out. Be careful what you order on Amazon. Make sure you know what it is exactly before you order and the item matches the description in all areas stating these facts. Find them in your local store and check them out there just to be sure. Most the reps I speak to on Amazon are excellent and thing go well. This reps English was not as good as the others. I gave these boots one less star because I didn't get to use them, but they appeared well made and fit nicely.

Best Boots on the Market!

This is my second pair of Pronghorns. I have the 400 gram and now the uninsulated. They fit like they were made for my foot. I can walk all day long in these boots. They don't need much breaking in and the size is spot on. If you're a 10, buy a 10.

Fantastic Boots

I recently purchased a pair of Danner Pronghorns. After reading the reviews about the boot here on Danner.com, i was skeptical, because their overall rating was 2 stars. I can only assume it received bad reviews because the boots customer's received were defective in some way (as can understandably happen from time to time with any mass produced product) or these customers had used the boot for a long time and not taken care of it.I am more than pleased with my decision to try the Pronghorns, because they are the most comfortable shoes Ive ever put on my feet. the padding on the insole offers excellent support, and they fit perfectly. The 8 in height offers ankle stability, while (after break in) remaining flexible enough for tremendous comfort. The poor reviews concerning the boot were mostly related to its lack of waterproofing. I took it upon myself to test this specifically, and rigorously. After some heavy rain and moderate flooding, i wore the boots on a several short hikes through the swampy woods in my are of NJ, and to my surprise and satisfaction, they preformed tremendously well. Dry feet completely, even after several total submersion up to the height of my ankle and lower calf. The outsole is tough and durable offering superior traction in wet and slippery up and downhill hikes. Even in warmer weather ( i tested them on hike in 70 degree weather) the boots were breathable and comfortable enough for a long hike with the proper socks. The same goes for colder weather too. they kept my feet warm in the wet snow we just had (its been a crazy week for weather here). i find no drawbacks to the boot, and as an avid hiker and backpacker, who lives by the principal of using the best gear, i highly recommend the boot. In response to the poor reviews, please remember that with any leather and or gortex boot, one must maintain it with proper cleaning and conditioning treatments in order for the leather and gortex bot to maintain their durability, flexability, and water resistance. Take Care of these boots, and they will most certainly take care of you.

This company pretends they are American made! About half the boots are made in China and a Chinese company bought Danner a year ago!!! Hello people, Danner is just like every other horrible, sold out company. They laugh at us who buy their stuff at 300.00 a pop thinking its American made!!!
