If you don't want chest or waist high waders, this is the best choice. Its way over the knee allows getting into streams part way which is usually all you need.The tread is good because it's not deep as a lugged sole which would be dangerous in the water.And it's not a flat tread either which is no good for the banks, and hard to stand and walk without falling.It's medium, a very very good compromise for mountain stream fishing.Excellent quality.Would suggest buying some 'arno' straps for cinching them at the top, such as at campmor.The perfect sock right here on amazon is 26" high browning socks. These will extend a couple inches above the boot as the socks are slightly over 26".If you don't like wearing waders, or are tired of leaks (which all waders will do after a little while), this is fine fisherman boot.
