5Super comfortable and very lightweight
By Jane
What do Xena, Wonder Woman, King Leonidas and Robin Hood all have in common? They would totally wear these boots. Now, I am not a Marine or in the armed forces so there is little story about how I found this boot.Basically, I've worn construction or hiking boots for most of my adult life. I've gone hiking in steel-toed work boots, I've worked all day in a metal shop wearing hiking boots. I've ridden many miles on mountain bikes wearing one or the other. Enter the combat boot. Combat boots have come a long way since WWII and Vietnam. Today's tactical and combat boots are like the perfect merging of heavy work boot to a hiking shoe. They are basically do-anything multi-purpose boots that can be used for PT, hunting, fishing, whatever. This boot is essentially a lightweight version of Bates USMC Durashock Warm Weather Boot with one major difference. It is much, (much) lighter owing to it's lack of a heavy-duty Vibram sole. This is good because it reduces foot and ankle fatigue. However, it may not be optimal under -extremely- heavy use in certain terrain. I've read elsewhere that the sole has some toughness problems when worn everyday by soldiers patrolling the rugged mountains of Afghanistan. Well, it doesn't have the thick Vibram lugs like its Warm Weather and Temperate Weather counterparts. The trade-off is weight. If you are just wearing an EDC bag and hiking through local forests or rolling hills these boots are the most amazing footwear, ever. Not too hot and not too cold. The boot sports two tiny holes on the inner arches covered with metal-mesh screens that were meant to allow water to drain and to keep desert sand out. They easily repel beach sand, this I have tested extensively.Because it has drainage holes and no goretex liner this boot is not waterproof, but the wolverine warrior leather is impregnated with Scotchgard3m and so it does repel water on the leather upper. The removable insole is the wolverine durashock brand and I have not yet tested them against aftermarket insoles. My problem with most hiking boots is that they fall apart easily if I use them for martial arts practice in addition to normal use. What these Bates have over hiking boots is toughness, hands down. The thing with most work boots is that the soles tend to be too hard and too inflexible, which is why your feet hurt from standing in them for eight hours. What this boot has over construction boots is all comfort. It's physically much lighter than any work boot (and many hiking boots). It's more breathable and less rigid but still has tons of ankle support. These combat boots absorb running/walking shock better than construction boots and so cause less foot and back strain. The sole is almost flat and smooth which is perfect for doing ground exercises or sparring or any situation where having a steep heel with a 90 degree step to it or aggressive lugs on the sole would not be ideal. The Ultralites comes with a removable insole, moisture wick lining and they comes in half sizes as well as extra-wide. Sizing, these boots seem to run large so you may want to order a half size down from your normal boot or sneaker size.Comfort: This boot is frankly the most comfortable boot I have ever stepped my hooves into. I've worn them coupled with a pair of Thorlo combat boot socks for over twenty hours straight without issue. There was a break in period, but barely. A few warm spots on my instep that went away in a week or two as the leather stretched out a bit. The Thorlo's made a big difference there too, since they are cushioned just right for the stiff leather of a combat boot.Looks: With your pant legs down normally, unbloused, it looks like a construction boot. Less subtle is to wear them with your jeans rolled up a bit to show off their awesomeness. The EGA symbol is faint and low profile. The olive-mojave leather is sexy and goes with multicam perfectly. I wouldn't mind a full-length trenchcoat or a pair of thigh-highs in that color.Technology: Wolverine Warrior Leather is inside-out pigskin, if that matters to you, versus cowhide. I like pigskin so that's not an issue. Durashock. This refers to two things, the durashock sole design and the cushioning of the stock insoles. Direct attach means that the boot upper was chemically bonded to the sole with polyeurethane--as opposed to stitch-down (work boots) or cement construction (sneakers). It makes for a very light bond that is tough but can not be resoled by cobbler.Durability: So far so good. I'll try to update this in six months to a year but I can't guarantee it.Bottom line: In certain things in life, you really do get what you paid for. 130-170$ for a pair of boots might seem a bit much especially in this economy but consider how much time you spend on your feet and how much punishment you put your feet through. If walking is your primary means of locomotion then you want a good shoe or boot. You don't want hurt feet or a boot that falls apart in a few months. Bates boots are really good boots and I have a few other models of theirs. But for now, this is my favorite.

5GREAT boots for our USMC son
By Homebody315
We bought these boots for our son for his "starting OCS" gift. He wore them for all long 'humps' and runs through his ten weeks at the USMC Officer Candidates School in Quantico, and never once complained about his knees bothering him (something that he HAD talked a LOT about during boot camp at Parris Island two years prior to his admission to OCS). While it might have had something to do with less time standing for long periods, I have to think the cushioned insole must have helped. And he had his best time ever for the 3-mile portion of the USMC physical fitness test wearing these boots: the lighter weight of these boots, I"m sure, had a lot to do with that! He took them with him when he left for The Basic School last week, where I'm sure they will continue to serve him well.

5NOT AUTHORIZED AT USMC OCS/TBS & WOBC
By Mike
These boots are ultralight, and it feels like you are running in sneakers. For me these have become CFT and O-Course boots however be warned that they are now not authorized for use at Marine Corps Officer Candidate School, The Basic School and I heard the Warrant Officer Basic Course has banned them as well.
